The 'It' bag is a staple of the fashion set
Handbags are the new shoes, the must-have 'it' accessories that every fashionista goes wild for the latest products from their favorite designers.
It's also a market that has more in common with the male-dominated world of classic cars than you'd realize.
A few months ago when Sainsbury's sold 20,000 Anya Hind-march 'I am not a plastic bag' bags for £5 each. Within hours, the same unmodified cotton bag was selling for over £150 on eBay.
"Every girl has a handbag and every girl wants a handbag," Christie's spokeswoman Monica Turcich said. Now women want the "It" bag that no one else is carrying.
They've always been popular, and our 20th-century products got most of our phones, but now they're doing especially well because everyone wants a handbag. When 10 years ago, there was no "it". ' The bag we have today is just classic. "
Like cars, most designer handbags sold by dealerships and auction houses are priced below their original retail price, losing a second price to the original purchase.
This is good news for investors and portfolio enthusiasts, but there are a few exceptions to the rule.
Last March, Christie's sold a Hermès red alligator leather Kelly bag for £10,800. This bag was purchased in 1994 and is the first custom-made.
According to Turcich, the Kelly bag is the "holy grail" of the classic handbag world. "Although Chloé and other modern bags are more popular now, quilted bags from Hermès and Chanel are classics that never go out of style and will always be around."
Kelly bags can be had for 600 GBP and usually sell for between 1,000 and 2,000 GBP. Not bad for a bag you could buy back in the 1960s.
There is no doubt that most handbags are bought to be used. It is not a capital market like many other products such as Paul Smith, Abercrombie, Fitch, Dsquared, etc.,
but again there are similarities to the automotive market. If you buy a classic bag and take good care of it, you won't lose any money, but the good thing is that you'll see regular returns on the extra cash you enjoy using.
Hindmarch's bag "I am not a plastic bag" is unlikely to receive the status of "classic". It's largely made of cotton after all, but other handbags in its line can.
So far Christie's hasn't sold any Hindmarch bags, but Turcich said he wouldn't be surprised if they start coming up for auction soon and wouldn't rule them out.
"Kylie Minogue was photographed wearing the trendy Chloe bracelet bag a few years ago, and now we're selling the same item at auction."
With other Chloe bags in the same range, there is a neat line of competition ahead, around £800 to £1,000. "I think Chloe kicked off the scene from 'her' bag," Turcich added.
People don't seem to have paid attention to the fact that handbags have become the new shoes in recent years. There are shoemakers who are artists, and there are handbags. "
A few weeks ago, Minogue bought a white raffia bag with a horse's head on the front from Tony Durante, a bag salesman at Alfie's in London, for around £200.
Since it's summer, colorful raffia bags are in fashion today. Durante says Kylie likes this particular bag because it's unusual.
Buy it from a vintage fashion retailer and you're unlikely to come across another celebrity wearing it. Durante says consumers are looking for the definition of "unique."
If you want to retain the value of your handbag, you must choose one that is on top and has a good and beautiful design. Some of the "it" bags may come down in price as things change, but the classics should stay the same.
